Exercise is good for the brain...Who knew? We knew! :)
What is Authentic Movement?
Authentic Movement is a practice that creates a space and a boundary of time to investigate Movement and Meditation in a personal way.
This is not dance in any recognizable way. It is meditation with eyes closed in an open space where movement is possible. There is a witness who reflects the body's journey - almost like a mirroring. What is unique about this practice is that it has two reciprocal sides. Mover and witness.
At Threshold Fitness Beyond the Physical we do our exercise without shoes or sneakers because the feet need to be engaged like every muscle in the body. Feeling the floor under your feet, engaging our awareness of how the whole foot works as we press to do a leg press or a squat, it changes the way we understand our balance, our orientations of left and right, favoring the outside of the foot or inside, using the toes and the heels...
WHAT IS AUTHENTIC MOVEMENT?
Authentic Movement is a practice of active and embodied imagination. It is a way of developing awareness of the inner movement of the mind and the outer movement of muscles and bones. It's personal and yet it can be shared. It can be practiced in a group setting where we invite awareness of how we experience ourselves and others, moment by moment, by just "listening" or tuning in to thoughts, feelings, impressions and moods as they pass.
We call it Contemplative Dance but this is not dance in any traditional sense. It is a meditation with eyes closed in an open space where movement is possible.
People hold tension in the upper mantel of their backs, shoulders and their neck. Often our clients at Threshold Fitness Beyond the Physical have high stress jobs that demand that they sit at a desk, poised above their computers for hours on end, and, as a result, of this held posture their necks and backs ache well after the work day, often leading to chronic discomfort. There are several things we do to inspire and effect change for our clients.
One of our favorite recipes we recommend is simple and delicious GARLIC GREENS. We eat it almost every day, and it literally takes 5 minutes max.
Choose a head of greens, Kale, Chard, Collards. Clean them. Chop the greens. Chop several cloves of garlic. Heat a pan of olive oil til it's pretty hot, toss the garlic and shake some crushed red pepper in there.
We've been advocating strength training for nearly 20 years, and the benefit we've seen in folks of all ages and abilities is truly astounding. We work with people who have had little to no exercise experience and really high-intensity athletes, with those who simply long to lose 10lbs, to those with chronic pain and inflexibility. In each we have nurtured progressive results that have changed the way our clients live their lives.
